BIG NANNY: NYC to Pass SALT Ban for all City Restaurants

From myfoxny.com comes the following story about a bill in the works to prohibit the use of salt in the preparation of food in New York City restaurants.

While this is hardly earth-shattering news, coming as it does from New York City (soon to be renamed Bloombergburg, in honor of its current Mayor-for-Life and Nanny-Statist Extraordinaire Michael Bloomberg), one has to wonder why city government would be putting a whole new level of regulatory burden on small business owners at a time when they are already suffering badly due to sharp roll-backs in discretionary spending of New York's consumers. Ohhh yeah, its the $1,000.00/INCIDENT fine. After all, NEW YORK is now nostril deep in its pile of fiscal doo-doo, and every revenue enhancement tool it has available might just yank it back from the brink of insolvency..

Chefs Call Proposed New York Salt Ban 'Absurd'

MYFOXNY.COM - Some New York City chefs and restaurant owners are taking aim at a bill introduced in the New York Legislature that, if passed, would ban the use of salt in restaurant cooking.

"No owner or operator of a restaurant in this state shall use salt in any form in the preparation of any food for consumption by customers of such restaurant, including food prepared to be consumed on the premises of such restaurant or off of such premises," the bill, A. 10129 , states in part.

The legislation, which Assemblyman Felix Ortiz , D-Brooklyn, introduced on March 5, would fine restaurants $1,000 for each violation.

"The consumer needs to make their own health choices. Just as doctors and the occasional visit to a hospital can't truly control how a person chooses to maintain their health, neither can chefs nor the occasional visit to a restaurant," said Jeff Nathan, the executive chef and co-owner of Abigael's on Broadway. "Modifying trans fats and sodium intake needs to be home based for optimal health. Regulating restaurants will not solve this health issue."

Nathan is part of the group My Food My Choice , which calls itself a coalition of chefs, restaurant owners, and consumers, called the proposed law "absurd" in a press release issued on its Facebook page.

Ortiz has said the salt ban would allow restaurant patrons to decide how salty they want their meals to be.

"In this way, consumers have more control over the amount of sodium they intake, and are given the option to exercise healthier diets and healthier lifestyles," Ortiz said, according to a Nation's Restaurant News report.

But many chefs and restaurant owners said they are tired of politicians dictating what they can serve and what people can eat. They have opposed the city's anti-sodium and anti-transfat campaigns.

"Chefs would be handcuffed in their food preparation, and many are already in open rebellion over this legislation," said Orit Sklar, of My Food My Choice. "Ortiz and fellow anti-salt zealot Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York City seek to undermine the food and restaurant business in the entire state."

The American Heart Association encourages Americans to reduce their sodium intake and has advocated the reduction of sodium used by food manufacturers and restaurants by 50 percent over a 10-year period.

Obama campaign cavalry rides in to save the day for GORDON BROWN.

Gordon Brown, Britain's increasingly desperate hapless twit of a PM has, with the help of Obama's campaign "wizards" come up with a sure fire winning slogan specially crafted to keep Labour in power for at least the balance of the Obama Administration.

Get ready, here it comes, the campaign theme that's gonna rock the British electoral system to its foundations. {Drum Roll}

"A future fair for all."

Huh ?????? Bwahahahahahahaha. Good luck with THAT Gordo!

D'ja evah think you might be getting set up Mistah Brown?

In fact, were I betting man I'd put money on that one being a reject from Barry's own 2008 campaign. Looks like ya might just have paid a whole lot of silver for a slogan they wouldn't even use themselves. Sucka...

Labour party gets tips from Obama campaign

Fri Feb 19, 2010 11:40pm GMT

LONDON (Reuters) - The Labour party is taking a page from U.S. President Barack Obama's campaign book by contacting voters directly and encouraging word of mouth campaigning by members, its election coordinator said.

Douglas Alexander said Labour, which has been clawing back some of the opposition Conservative party's commanding lead ahead of an election that must be held by June 3, has been in discussion with the Obama team for more than a year.

"Their key campaigning insight in an age of cynicism about politicians is word of mouth," Alexander told the Guardian newspaper for an interview published in its Saturday edition.

"The (opposition) Conservatives are fighting a broadcast election in a networked age. What we are going to offer is not a one-way communication, but one-to-one communication," he added.

"Obama better understood community organisation and peer-to-peer communication than any recent candidate and we are applying that lesson."

He said Labour had made 400,000 voter contacts in marginal seats since the start of the year -- double the number of such contacts in the 2005 election -- using software that allows party members to set up phone banks in their homes to contact voters and build a relationship with them.

Revealing a new election slogan, "A future fair for all" -- due to be officially unveiled by Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Saturday -- Alexander said it had been chosen to counter what he called the Conservative's "empty" offer of change.

"Change is a process, future is a destination. People want a sense of hope, possibility and pride about Britain," he said, adding that beneath the anxiety and anger over bankers' bonuses, the expenses scandal and the recession, there was a "submerged optimism" among voters.

The Humble Libertarian: Joe Stack Was A Left Leaning Marxist

W.E. MESSAMORE primary author for The Humble Libertarian has put up a remarkably good analysis of Joe Stack's screed that quite conclusively demonstrates that Mr. Stack was a far left wing zealot and demonstrably not the "Tea Party" enthusiast that the Ostrich Media Elite has tried - quite desperately - to paint him as.

RASMUSSEN REPORTS: Are California State Legislators facing an electoral bloodbath come November?

Just caught this today over at Rasmussen Reports and it makes me wonder if the stench of that state's debt bomb has just awoken Californians like a stink bomb brings around the unconscious. Perhaps its too soon to tell, but the numbers suggest a possible seismic shift in economic ideology is underway in Kali-for-nia

60% in California Say Better If Most Incumbents in State Legislature Are Defeated

Thursday, February 18, 2010

As California stumbles through its continuing budget crisis, 60% of likely voters in the state now believe it would be better if most incumbents in the state legislature were defeated in this November’s elections.

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in California finds just 17% think it would be better if most of the legislative incumbents were reelected. Another 23% are undecided.

Sixty-nine percent (69%) of Republicans and 60% of voters not affiliated with either major party say it would be better if most incumbents were defeated, a view shared by just 52% of Democrats.

Voters are much more ambivalent, however, when asked about their own state assemblyman. Twenty-eight percent (28%) say their local representative deserves to be reelected, but 33% disagree. A sizable 39% more are undecided.

Not that voters are happier about how Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has handled the state budget crisis. Thirteen percent (13%) now give the governor good or excellent marks for the job he is doing. Fifty percent (50%) view his performance as poor.

Former eBay CEO Meg Whitman now runs dead even with likely Democratic nominee Jerry Brown in California’s gubernatorial contest. Brown continues to maintain a double-digit lead over the other leading Republican in the race, State Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner.

Seventy-five percent (75%) of California voters say the bigger problem for the state is not taxpayers’ unwillingness to pay enough in taxes but is instead the unwillingness of politicians to control government spending. Still, that’s down nine points from 84% in May of last year. But only 16% see taxpayers’ unwillingness to pay enough as the bigger problem.

To meet California’s multi-billion-dollar deficit, 43% of voters say the state should cut back on services. Twenty-six percent (26%) say it should raise taxes, and 18% think the state should file for bankruptcy. These findings are little changed from a month ago. But in January 2009, California voters were evenly divided over whether taxes should be raised or government spending cut to reduce the state budget deficit.

Thirty-seven percent (37%) say the state tries to do too much, while 41% believe it doesn’t do enough. Fourteen percent (14%) say it does about the right amount of what the public wants.

As the result of a voter proposition passed in 1988, California requires automobile insurers to get approval from the state insurance commissioner before they can raise rates. With the largest public health insurer in the state just announcing rate increases up to 39%, most California voters (70%) now believe health insurance companies also should be required to get state approval before they raise their rates. Only 13% disagree, but another 17% aren’t sure.

Just 26% of voters in the state now approve of Schwarzenegger’s job performance, while 73% disapprove. These numbers include six percent (5%) who strongly approve of the job he is doing versus 37% who strongly disapprove.

For the second month in a row, incumbent Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer is in surprisingly tight races with three potential Republican challengers in California.

In 2008, Rasmussen Reports projected nationally that Obama would defeat John McCain by a 52% to 46% margin. Obama won 53% to 46%. Four years earlier, Rasmussen Reports projected the national vote totals for both George W. Bush and John Kerry within half-a-percentage-point.

In California during the 2008 campaign, Rasmussen Reports polling showed Barack Obama winning the state by a 61% to 34% margin. Obama won 61% to 37%. Four years earlier, Rasmussen Reports polling showed John Kerry leading George W. Bush in California 53% to 43%. Kerry won 54% to 44%.

In the 2006 California governor’s race, Rasmussen polling showed Schwarzenegger defeating Phil Angelides 53% to 40%. Schwarzenegger won 56% to 39%. In the 2006 race for U.S. Senate, Rasmussen polling showed Dianne Feinstein defeating Richard Mountjoy 58% to 35%. Feinstein won 60% to 35%.

Fun in the Snow - So now I don't have to move to warmer climes

Not sure how these young ladies can stand the cold.... but they are young and presumably have faster metabolisms than I do. Every winter, usually while shoveling the white stuff, I promise myself that I'll move to a much warmer place soon!

RASMUSSEN REPORTS: 75% of polled likely voters reject Keynesian Economic Theory

Somewhat fresh from the Rasmussen Report comes this report that 75% of polled respondents reject the theories of Democrat economics deity John Maynard Keynes.

None of this should come as much of a surprise. Its what the Tea Party movement is all about. Most working people (as the poll report below dramatically demonstrates) generally seem to grasp the concept that high taxes and Himalayan debt loads are exactly the wrong prescription for an economy suffering the equivalent of a cerebral hemorrhage. So how come our political class can't grasp these elemental truths? I suggest that there are two reasons: (1) Most politicians are not particularly intelligent, they're just street savvy and skilled suck-up artists, and (2) politicians are constitutionally allergic to "Truth."

Anyway, here it is:

Americans Reject Keynesian Economics

Friday, February 05, 2010

Richard Nixon once said, “We’re all Keynesians now.” But that was a long time ago, and it’s certainly not the case anymore (if it ever was).

While influential 20th Century economist John Maynard Keynes would say it’s best to increase deficit spending in tough economic times, only 11% of American adults agree and think the nation needs to increase its deficit spending at this time. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 70% disagree and say it would be better to cut the deficit.

In fact, 59% think Keynes had it backwards and that increasing the deficit at this time would hurt the economy rather than help.

To help the economy, most Americans (56%) believe that cutting the deficit is the way to go.

Eighty-three percent (83%) of Americans, in fact, say the size of the federal budget deficit is due more to the unwillingness of politicians to cut government spending than to the reluctance of taxpayers to pay more in taxes.

(Want a free daily e-mail update? If it's in the news, it's in our polls). Rasmussen Reports updates are also available on Twitter or Facebook.

Rejection of Keynesian economics is found across demographic and partisan lines. Republicans and those not affiliated with either major party overwhelmingly reject the notion that increasing the deficit is the right prescription in difficult economic times. Among Democrats, 21% agree with the Keynesian approach, and 47% do not.

Investors reject deficit spending even more strongly than non-investors.

Of course, not all deficits are created equal. Forty-nine percent (49%) of the nation’s voters believe it’s more important to cut spending than to reduce the deficit. Polling released earlier this week shows a similar attitude as voters prefer lower taxes and deficits to higher taxes and a balanced budget.

However, all polling on federal spending and deficits must be viewed with the recognition that only 35% of voters realize that the majority of federal spending goes to just defense, Social Security and Medicare.

"These figures highlight a massive failure of leadership from both Republicans and Democrats among the nation’s political elite,” says Scott Rasmussen, president of Rasmussen Reports. “Given the amount of political chatter about the budget in recent years, it is almost beyond comprehension that neither party has seen fit to highlight the basics so that the American people can make reasoned choices on the fundamental issues before them.”

AXELROD:IS HE IN SPIN MODE OR MERELY DELUSIONAL???

I say spin mode.

David Axelrod is an unrepentant elitist "progressive" cynic who, like BOZ and Emanuel, and Reid, and Pelosi, and Frank, and Dodd (OK, OK... I know the post would begin to look like a Book of Genesis chapter if I listed them all, but you get the idea) doesn't give a rat's backside what the people really want. I believe he knows FULL FLIPPIN WELL just how angry voters really are AT HIS BOSS and is presently at a loss on how to cope with it, though there are indications that he'll have BOZ go NASTY now that Scott Brown has won. See Left Coast Rebel

David: If you wind up reading this admittedly obscure blog, take away this simple message from it:

IT'S YOUR AGENDA, STUPID

From Politico

"We're going to keep on advocating for the things that we believe are necessary to get this economy moving again, to get people back to work, to lift incomes, to get people more economic security. We will work with whomever wants to work with us to get that done, and I think that's what the American people want. ... We're FAMILIAR with the vote that was cast today: Some of the same sentiment that propelled [Brown's] campaign, propelled ours -- the sense that this economy doesn't work particularly well for middle class, working people ... You overlay the fact that we're in a recession -- the deepest since the Great Depression -- and people are understandably agitated. There is a restiveness -- and I think it's been intensified by the economy and by the recession -- that is real. There were many factors that were peculiar to this race, ... and let's give Brown his due: He ran a spectacular campaign. ... The lesson is to focus very clearly on the concerns -- particularly the economic concerns -- of everyday people. And those concerns go to jobs. Those concerns go to retirement security. They go to the cost of education kids. And, yes, they go to the cost of health care, too. ... I think that it would a terrible mistake to walk away now. If we don't pass the bill, all we have is the stigma of a caricature that was put on it. That would be the worst result for everybody who has supported this bill."

Haiti, A Test Case for The Emanuel Doctrine?

As OBAMA'S domestic support collapses in metaphoric rubble akin to the very real rubble facing the survivors in Port au Prince and as his agenda is widely rejected at home with plummeting poll numbers and the likely humiliating defeat of yet another fellow elitist "progressive" democrat Martha Coakley by a formerly complete unknown Republican state senator Scott Brown in a special election today to fill the U.S. senate seat f/k/a as Teddy Kennedy's and n/k/a the "People's Seat" in Massachusetts, it appears that BOZ, desperate for a major bump in the polls, has now converted the 2008 campaign advice - Never Let a Crisis Go to Waste - of his CoS, Chicago THUG extraordinaire Rahm Emanuel, into his Foreign Policy Doctrine. Obama's Solution: OCCUPY HAITI!

From the Times of London
:

US accused of 'occupying' Haiti as troops flood in

France accused the US of "occupying" Haiti on Monday as thousands of American troops flooded into the country to take charge of aid efforts and security.

By Aislinn Laing, and Tom Leonard in Port-au-Prince.

The French minister in charge of humanitarian relief called on the UN to "clarify" the American role amid claims the military build up was hampering aid efforts.

Alain Joyandet admitted he had been involved in a scuffle with a US commander in the airport's control tower over the flight plan for a French evacuation flight.

"This is about helping Haiti, not about occupying Haiti," Mr Joyandet said.

Geneva-based charity Medecins Sans Frontieres backed his calls saying hundreds of lives were being put at risk as planes carrying vital medical supplies were being turned away by American air traffic controllers.

But US commanders insisted their forces' focus was on humanitarian work and last night agreed to prioritise aid arrivals to the airport over military flights, after the intervention of the UN.

The diplomatic row came amid heightened frustrations that hundreds of tons of aid was still not getting through. Charities reported violence was also worsening as desperate Haitians took matters into their own hands.

The death toll is now estimated at up to 200,000 lives. Around three million Haitians – a third of the country's population – have been affected by Tuesday's earthquake and two million require food assistance.

While food and water was gradually arriving at the makeshift camps which have sprung up around the city, riots have broken out in other areas where supplies have still not materialised.

Haiti was occupied by the US between 1915 and 1935, and historical sensitivities together with friction with other countries over the relief effort has made the Americans cautious about their role in the operation.

American military commanders have repeatedly stressed that they are not entering the country as an occupying force.

US soldiers in Port-au-Prince said they had been told to be discreet about how they carry their M4 assault rifles.

A paratrooper sergeant said they were authorised to use "deadly force" if they see anyone's life in danger but only as a "last resort".

Capt John Kirby, a spokesman for the joint task force at the airport, said the US recognised it was only one of a number of countries contributing to a UN-led mission.

He also emphasised the US troops, which he said would rise to 10,000 by Wednesday would principally be assisting in humanitarian relief and the evacuation of people needing medical attention.

The main responsibility for security rests with the UN, which is to add a further 3,000 troops to its force of 9,000.

However, it was agreed on Sunday night that the Americans would take over security at the four main food and water distribution points being set up in the city, Capt Kirby said.

"Security here is in a fluid situation," he said. "If the Haitian government asked us to provide security downtown, we would do that." He played down the threat of violence, saying: "What we're seeing is that there are isolated incidents of violence and some pockets where it's been more restive, but overall it's calm."

DEMOCRAT DEMENTIA: COAKLEY FLOUNDERS, BUSH TO BLAME

UPDATE: James, penning The Reaganite Republican, has a great round-up on bloggers covering the Brown v. Coakley race.

Fully a year after George Bush left office, Democrats continue to play pin the blame on Bush for all that ails us now. And the Democrat base, as represented by retired school teacher
Rosemary Kverek, continues to exhibit its propensity for very poor reasoning (as well as basic math) skills on precisely who's at fault for the economic morass in which we find ourselves today. Not to be out-shined by former teacher Ms. Kverek in the blame game, Ted Kennedy's son, Patrick (D-RI) appears to think that the Democrats should spend even more time blaming Bush and the Republicans for Chris Dodd and Barney Frank's collusive criminality with the Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac Ponzi scheme. From Hotline OnCall, comes this piece:

After Obama Rally, Dems Pin Blame On Bush

By Felicia Sonmez

As audience members streamed out of Pres. Obama's rally on behalf of AG Martha CoakleyGeorge W. Bush.
(D) here tonight, the consensus was that the fault for Coakley's now-floundering MA SEN bid lies with one person --

"People are upset because there's so many problems," Rosemary Kverek, 70, a retired Charleston schoolteacher said as tonight's rally wrapped up. "But the problems came from the previous administration. So we're blaming poor Obama, who's working 36 hours a day ... to solve these problems that he inherited."

Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-RI), speaking with a gaggle of reporters after the event, said that while state Sen. Scott Brown (R) offers voters a quick fix, in reality, the problems created by "George Bush and his cronies" are not so easily solved.

"If you think there's magic out there and things can be turned around overnight, then you would vote for someone who could promise you that, like Scott Brown," Kennedy said. "If you don't, if you know that it takes eight years for George Bush and his cronies to put our country into this hole ... then you know we have a lot of digging to do, but some work needs to be done and this president's in the process of doing it and we need to get Marcia Coakley to help him to do that."

(Curiously, Kennedy mentioned Coakley repeatedly during his remarks to reporters, each time referring to her as "Marcia," not "Martha.")

More Kennedy: "One thing the Democrats have done wrong? We haven't kept the focus on this disaster on the Republicans who brought it upon us. We've tried too hard to do that right thing, and that's to fix it, as opposed to spend more of our time and energy pointing the finger at who got us [here] in the first place."

Blaming their problems on Bush does carry a risk for Dems, however -- with their sights so firmly focused on the past, Brown's campaign has managed to wrest the "change" mantle from them.

Meanwhile, even as Kennedy took on both Bush and Brown head-on, some attendees were more muted in their criticism of Brown.

"I mean, he is handsome," Christine DiPitro, 61, of Malden, said of Brown.

"He does appeal to the regular guy with his truck, but that's about all."

From American Thinker: Iran and Its Revolutions

Below follows an extremely interesting and thoughtful piece on the anti-regime protests in Iran, and the potential consequences to the West if our leadership, particularly the Boz, continues its listless approach in dealing with the monsters of Qom. I know the author personally; he knows all to well what of he writes.

Iran and Its Revolutions

By K.M.Mehrdad, PhD
In the past weeks, the most sacred symbols of Iran's '79 Revolution -- namely its flag and its founding father, Ayatollah Khomeini -- have come under direct attack. Given that the regime views these acts as warranting death, the demonstrators' ultimate goal can be no less than a regime change.

Since 1979, Iran has endured a brutal theocracy, renowned for corruption, abuse of women and minorities, and second only to China in the number of people it executes. Despite record-high oil revenues, the theocracy has devastated the economy. Iran suffers from severe stagflation, a brain-drain, and under-producing industries. Consequently, a young person's only hope is to escape Iran at the first opportunity, despite lacking savings or a passport (to which few countries issue visas) and carrying currency worth less than one percent of its value in 1979.

As a way out of its desperation, traditional Iranian society now faces some of the world's highest rates of drug abuse and prostitution. Yet the country's resources go to enrich the clerical state, its revolutionary guards, and its proxies in Iraq, Lebanon, and Gaza, among others. To add insult to injury, the regime denigrates Iranians' sense of pride in their ancient history by systematically attacking the country's pre-Islamic culture and symbols of nationalism in order to impose its own religious identity.

After decades of enduring this physical and psychological assault, people have poured into the streets to show Iran's true face to the world: non-extremist, tending towards secular government, westward-leaning, focused internally rather than on the conflicts plaguing the Middle East, and longing to rejoin the community of nations.

However, short of a miracle, the Iranians' costly struggle for democracy is not likely to bear fruit. In 1979, Mohammad Rezā Shāh Pahlavi, a feeble monarch who detested confrontation, led Iran. The Shah was besieged by Ayatollah Khomeini -- an implacable, charismatic religious leader who had successfully brought disparate opposition groups under one umbrella. A large number of Iranians studying abroad actively supported Khomeini. Moreover, through his "human rights" policy, President Jimmy Carter had pressured and demoralized the Shah into further passivity, until the Shah finally fled Iran instead of defending his regime.

Indeed, months before the Shah's departure, Washington was in touch with the opposition to facilitate the impending transfer of power. In the end, the demonstrations against the Shah were highly organized and well-directed. Many demonstrators, who missed work or had gone on strike to back the Ayatollah, were financially compensated by Khomeini and his bazaari supporters.

Today, the demonstrators go it alone, and they have no means of defending themselves against the regime's armed thugs. Moussavi, the movement's nominal leader, confirms the clerical establishment rather than denouncing it.

Little support for those who oppose the current government comes from Iranian expatriates, particularly those in academia and related fields. This is because a majority of these expatriates once agitated against the Shah. They find it convenient to indirectly support the current regime rather than call for its ouster (and be reminded of how their own zeal helped put the present regime into power in the first place). Through ties with other academics, these groups work hard to preserve Iran's clerical theocracy.

No support is forthcoming from Washington, either. Not only is tangible aid denied, but U.S.-based human rights groups focusing on Iran are having their funds cut by an administration anxious to placate the regime. Finally, unlike in 1979, the demonstrators face a state that will resort to maximum force to maintain power. The current regime in Iran enjoys strong backing from Russia and China. Unless this status quo is altered, there is little room for optimism.

Yet the situation may not be hopeless. By opening a channel of communication to the demonstrators and providing them moral and material support, the movement may be able to sustain itself, allow for leadership to emerge, and become organized.

Suggesting that any foreign support for the demonstrators will be used as an excuse to discredit and further brutalize the citizens of Iran is an excuse for inaction. In spite of the fact that there has been very little foreign assistance to the demonstrators in Iran, the entire uprising is still being blamed on the West.

Irrespective of international pressure, the Iranian regime will do what it must to preserve itself; the excuses it uses in the process are immaterial.

But with our help, millions of Iranian citizens could rise in protest. Discrediting them would not be easy, at least not for such a regime as this. On the contrary, demonstrations will grow in size when the silent majority becomes convinced that outside support is genuine and will not be withdrawn due to some backdoor agreement with Tehran.

Putting into effect a well-planned and well-executed policy of tightening the economic screws on the regime and preventing it from exporting oil should be the next steps. Simultaneously, there must be a willingness to strongly consider any plan, short of landing troops, which will eliminate the regime's largest and most active nuclear sites. Adopting policies that fall short of these steps is unlikely to exert serious and effective pressure on the regime, much less undermine it.

The fact that the regular army has not yet been deployed against the demonstrators indicates that the Iranian leadership fears that the army might side with the opposition.

Should the beleaguered regime consent to a U.S.-brokered compromise on nuclear issues, its only aim would be to buy time and reconsolidate power. To believe otherwise is extremely naïve. The Islamic Republic views the possession of nuclear weapons as the sole guarantor for its survival and ability to expand regional influence. Under no circumstances will it give up its quest to obtain a nuclear arsenal. It is about time we understood this.

President Obama faces a unique opportunity, where the forces favoring regime change are in alignment. These include a sizable majority of Iranians, as well as the Persian Gulf states and America's Western allies. A regime change in Iran would not only resolve the current nuclear impasse, but it would also deal a blow to extremism worldwide by recasting Iran as a reasonable actor. Unless Iranians are given a chance to select their regime through a legally monitored national referendum, the Middle East will remain in turmoil. Only those supporting the regime would lose from a referendum.

If the world continues to ignore the aspirations for freedom of the people of Iran, there will be grave consequences: the rise of a nuclear Islamic Republic that is more radicalized, repressive, and emboldened by a sense of impunity. A nuclear Iran would likely form an even closer alliance with Moscow, allowing the latter a base in the Gulf of Oman or the Persian Gulf.

Having lost the trust of its own people, Iran will move to compensate for that loss through policies that appeal to the disillusioned and more radical elements in the region. Even greater human rights abuses in Iran, nuclear proliferation in the Middle East, and continuation of the regime's disruptive presence in Latin America could be some of the side effects.

Resorting to the routine invocation of the specter of neo-con philosophy to prevent any foreign policy action that goes beyond continuous talking will only hasten the advent of an equally (if not more) problematic neo-lib viewpoint. Iraq taught us what not to do; it did not teach us not to do anything. Modern history is replete with examples of great efforts to protect people and nations from inhuman regimes, and accomplishing such goals is never without cost.

In the wake of the Iraq war, however, as in the post-Vietnam era, a sentiment seems to have permeated the establishment and most opinion-makers that contributes to an apparent decision-making paralysis towards exigent foreign policy concerns. This situation is exacerbated by inflated hypothetical writings that constantly trumpet the Islamic Republic's military prowess, while projecting an apocalyptic image of what will happen if any hard action is taken against it. Likewise, regime sympathizers try frightening the U.S. by evoking the bizarre conceit that a worse entity could replace this one.

Those who fear the retaliatory actions of the Islamic Republic, such as its indiscriminately attacking foreign targets, will do well to remember that delaying the inevitable only results in greater costs and losses. More infamous now than ever, the regime is in internal dispute, economically weak, and under siege. The likely outcome of such a backlash would be to further delegitimize it, precipitate even greater unity among its external opponents, erode its internal controls over the nation, and accelerate its collapse. The stakes are too high too allow for inaction, and the opportunities too unique.

Adhering to one-sided and defeatist viewpoints while betting the house on a promissory signature that Tehran will halt uranium enrichment will be a parody of real policy with irreparable consequences.

RASMUSSEN REPORTS: OBAMA REACHES TWO NEW LOWS -21 Approval Index, -12 Overall Approval

MERRY CHRISTMAS MR. PRESIDENT

BTW, on the off chance you're wondering why your numbers are swirling down the bowl: IT'S YOUR AGENDA, STUPID!!!!

DAILY PRESIDENTIAL TRACKING POLL

Tuesday, December 22, 2009

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows that 25% of the nation's voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty-six percent (46%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -21 That’s the lowest Approval Index rating yet recorded for this President (see trends).

Fifty-three percent (53%) of men Strongly Disapprove along with 39% of women. Most African-American voters (58%) Strongly Approve while most white voters (53%) Strongly Disapprove.

Seventy-four percent (74%) of Republicans Strongly Disapprove as do 52% of unaffiliated voters. Forty-seven percent (47%) of Democrats Strongly Approve.

For the second straight days, the update shows the highest level of Strong Disapproval yet recorded for this President. That negative rating had never topped 42% before yesterday. However, it has risen dramatically since the Senate found 60 votes to move forward with the proposed health care reform legislation. Most voters (55%) oppose the health care legislation and senior citizens are even more likely than younger voters to dislike the plan.

One bright spot in the numbers for the President is that 51% of voters still say former President George W. Bush is more to blame for the nation’s economic woes. Just 41% point the finger of blame at the current President.

The Presidential Approval Index is calculated by subtracting the number who Strongly Disapprove from the number who Strongly Approve. It is updated daily at 9:30 a.m. Eastern (sign up for free daily e-mail update). Updates are also available on Twitter and Facebook.

Overall, 44% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President's performance. Fifty-six percent (56%) now disapprove.

FAT UGLY WHITE RICH SELF APPOINTED LEFTWING PROPAGANDIST MICHAEL MOORE VOWS BOYCOTT OF CONNECTICUT

From Michelle Malkin comes the piece below on the gargantuan Rabelaisian scolding Turd from Flint Michigan threatening a Progressive Boycott of Connecticut if Nutmegger voters don't immediately cave to his infantile demand that we remove Joe Lieberman from office by a procedure not available under our Constitution.

Beclowned: Michael Moore threatens to boycott Connecticut over Lieberman

By Michelle Malkin • December 16, 2009 09:10 PM

Nutroots hero Michael Moore sent the state of Connecticut a boycott threat and demanded that voters there recall Joe Lieberman over health care.

His Tweet:

People of Connecticut: What have u done 2 this country? We hold u responsible. Start recall of Lieberman 2day or we’ll boycott your state.

One itty-bitty problem: Connecticut has no recall mechanism.

In fact, as Caleb Howe explains:

…Moore has an article at his own website, a repost of a Politico article, featuring a Connecticut state legislator calling for Lieberman’s ouster. The article, on Moore’s own website, points out that recall is not possible under the constitution.

Is there anyone on this planet quicker to claim the constitution is being violated at every turn than Michael Moore and his groupies? So yes, to state the obvious, it’s hilarious that he’s so quick to dismiss as conveniences him.

We all know Moore is a clown, so this isn’t breaking news. But I never pass on the chance to point out the stupidity of inexplicably influential jackasses.

Beclowned!

MICHAEL: PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PRETTY PLEASE, WITH 320 POUNDS OF SUGAR ATOP, SCHEDULE YOUR BOYCOTT, BUT JUST MAKE IT PERMANENT. I SWEAR, I WON'T MIND A BIT!

Rasmussen Daily Tracking Poll & Trends: Obama -18 Index, Total Disapprove Hits High of 55%

President Obama and his agenda are now in serious trouble domestically. Today's Rasmussen Daily Presidential Approval Index shows Obama at -18, a mere point higher than yesterday's all time low of -19. But this high negative hardly tells the whole story.

At this point Obama has also hit a Total Disapprove of 55% versus a Total Approve at 44% giving Boz a negative overall disapproval rating of -11, yet another record low.

REPUBLICANS: ADAPT OR PERISH

On Monday (Dec 7), Rasmussen Reports released poll results showing that the Tea Party movement would best the Republicans in a three way contest.

These numbers ought to be a piercing and painful clarion call to the national Republican leadership to get back quickly to the core conservative principles of (1) strictly limited government interference and (2) a strong fiscally conservative approach to the economy and never stray from them again.

In a nutshell, Republicans: Adapt to the clear will of the people, or die.

UPDATE: Matt at ConservativeHideout2 has also picked up on this story and discussed it at greater length here

Tea Party Tops GOP on Three-Way Generic Ballot
Monday, December 07, 2009

Running under the Tea Party brand may be better in congressional races than being a Republican.

In a three-way Generic Ballot test, the latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds Democrats attracting 36% of the vote. The Tea Party candidate picks up 23%, and Republicans finish third at 18%. Another 22% are undecided.

Among voters not affiliated with either major party, the Tea Party comes out on top. Thirty-three percent (33%) prefer the Tea Party candidate, and 30% are undecided. Twenty-five percent (25%) would vote for a Democrat, and just 12% prefer the GOP.

Among Republican voters, 39% say they’d vote for the GOP candidate, but 33% favor the Tea Party option.

For this survey, the respondents were asked to assume that the Tea Party movement organized as a new political party. In practical terms, it is unlikely that a true third-party option would perform as well as the polling data indicates. The rules of the election process—written by Republicans and Democrats--provide substantial advantages for the two established major parties. The more conventional route in the United States is for a potential third-party force to overtake one of the existing parties.

(Want a free daily e-mail update? If it's in the news, it's in our polls). Rasmussen Reports updates are also available on Twitter or Facebook.

The standard Generic Congressional Ballot shows Republicans holding a modest lead over Democrats. It appears that the policies of the Obama administration and the Democratic Congress are currently enough to unite both those who prefer Republicans and those who prefer the Tea Party route.

Data from the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll shows that just 55% of conservatives nationwide consider themselves Republicans. Recent polling shows that 73% of Republican voters believe their leaders in Washington are out of touch with the party base.

Republican voters are paying a lot more attention to the Tea Party movement than anyone else. Forty-three percent (43%) of GOP voters are following news about the movement Very Closely. Another 30% are following it Somewhat Closely. Just 12% of Democrats are following stories about the Tea Party movement Very Closely.

Seventy percent (70%) of Republican voters have a favorable opinion of the Tea Party movement while only seven percent (7%) offer an unfavorable view. Interestingly, 49% of Democrats have no opinion one way or the other.

Among unaffiliated voters, 43% have a favorable opinion of the Tea Party efforts while 20% say the opposite.

Forty-one percent (41%) of all voters nationwide say Republicans and Democrats are so much alike that a new party is needed to represent the American people. Republicans are evenly divided on this question, while Democrats overwhelmingly disagree. However, among those not affiliated with either major party, 60% agree that a new party is needed, and only 25% disagree. Men are far more likely than women to believe a new party is needed.

As for the voting preference, the Tea Party bests the GOP among both men and women and in all age groups except those over 65.

The Tea Party candidates are the first choice among political conservatives. Among moderates, the Tea Party candidates are more popular than Republicans. However, nearly half of all moderate voters prefer a Democrat.

Among the Political Class, not a single respondent picked the Tea Party candidate.

However, among those with populist or Mainstream views, 31% prefer the Tea Party, and 26% are undecided. Twenty-three percent (23%) pick a Republican candidate, and 19% are for the Democrat (See more on the Political Class-Mainstream divide).

Conn Senate Race: Per Rasmussen, all three leading Republican contenders beat Dodd in One on One matchups.

Great news from Rasmussen for us Nutmeggers and, by extension, the rest of the country as well:

2010 Connecticut Senate: Dodd Struggles Against All Republican Challengers
Tuesday, December 08, 2009

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in Connecticut now finds Dodd attracting just 35% to 40% of the vote against three possible Republican challengers.

Former GOP Congressman Rob Simmons is still his toughest opponent, leading Dodd 48% to 35%. Seven percent (7%) prefer some other candidate in this contest, and 11% are undecided. Those figures are a slight improvement for Simmons since September.

The newest Republican in the race, Linda McMahon, the ex-CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment, earns 44% of the vote to Dodd’s 38%. Eight percent (8%) opt for another candidate, with nine percent (9%) not sure.

Long-shot candidate Peter Shiff, the widely-known president of Euro Pacific Capital, is essentially even with Dodd and holds a one-point edge, 40% to 39%. In their race, eight percent (8%) like some other candidate, and 14% are undecided.

An incumbent who polls below 50% is generally viewed as vulnerable, and the fact that even Shiff is now moving up on Dodd suggests that next year’s election continues to be a referendum on the longtime senator.

GOLDMAN SACHS HONCHOS ARMING FOR POPULAR UPRISING AGAINST BANKERS????

Here's a great piece on how Obama's Puppeteers at Goldman Sachs are starting to get a wee bit nervous about the rising tide of public anger against ..... well, THEM. It makes for a great read. H/T Christopher Fountain

From Karl Denninger: Goldman Arming Itself? :->

Dec. 1 (Bloomberg) -- “I just wrote my first reference for a gun permit,” said a friend, who told me of swearing to the good character of a Goldman Sachs Group Inc. banker who applied to the local police for a permit to buy a pistol. The banker had told this friend of mine that senior Goldman people have loaded up on firearms and are now equipped to defend themselves if there is a populist uprising against the bank.

Let me give those fine bankers from Goldman Sachs (and the other big banking and trading houses) a few pieces of advice. And yeah, it's unsolicited and free, so you figure out whether it has value.

  1. A handgun is a close-quarters defensive weapon. The FBI says that of shootings involving a handgun, most happen at something like 7 feet (yes, feet) of range or less. Oh, and you'd be surprised at how many people miss at that same seven feet. No, guns in real life don't work like in the movies where each bullet has a GPS in it and directs itself to its target, and when shot people don't go flying backward through windows. Guns simply make holes in things, wherever they are pointed when they go "bang" is where the bullet will travel, and all the energy that goes into the target also goes into your body (Newton's laws of motion and all.)

  2. There are, by some estimates, more firearms in America than there are people. Americans bought something like 20 billion rounds of ammunition this year alone. Indeed, there are shortages of many sorts of ammunition and have been all year. While some of that lead undoubtedly was expended at the practice range, an awful lot of it is being stockpiled. Everyone who is stockpiling it in various amounts is doing so for different reasons, and most would self-declare it as protection against "zombies." Definitions of "zombie" differ.

  3. There are a lot of hunting rifles in America. Most hunters can easily hit a deer-sized target at well beyond 100 yards with said rifle. I'm willing to bet that Mr. Investment Banker can't hit the broadside of a barn at 100yds with his brand new pistol that he's probably never fired, and probably never will.

  4. Don't bother with soft body armor. It's useless against rifles. It is effective against pistols, which is why cops wear it (see that FBI stat about most handgun battles happening within seven feet.) But again, a hunter can easily hit a deer-sized target at well beyond 100 yards, common hunting rifles are legal almost literally everywhere, even in places like NYC, and a person armed with a handgun doesn't have a prayer in hell defending against a person with a rifle 100 or more yards away that has drawn a bead on them.

  5. Unless you're prepared to practice with that weapon on a regular basis, and unless you have personally been in a life-threatening situation (a real one, not some mock-up or fake "game" run at some "weekend commando" class you were undoubtedly sold to make you feel macho with that shiny new handgun) there is at least a 50% chance that if you really do wind up confronted by some crazed nutball at close range you will either miss or worse, freeze - and the "bad guy" will simply take your gun from you and then kill you with your own weapon. Go ask the military about this - studies have shown that despite putting new soldiers through a grueling "basic training" course a veryat them, intentionally fire high - that is, they miss on purpose in their first firefight. It turns out that most people have a hard-wired aversion to killing other humans. That's probably a good thing but psychopaths seem to be missing that inhibition. If someone really does come after you they're pretty much by definition one of those psychopaths. significant number of them will, when first confronted with an enemy shooting

Finally, if you're a "big banker" and concerned about your safety you might want to consider that in the 1800s there were lots of guns too, and yet they were both unnecessary and inadequate. Bankers during the panic of 1873 were simply hauled out of their offices bodily and hung from the lamp posts. We don't have lamp posts any more in Manhattan, so you have an advantage there, and I've not noted a run on boiled rope.

Yet.

A better strategy for your self-protection is to turn state's evidence and rat out someone else. Like your boss, for instance.

Get on the side of the people and help them. You folks in those tony executive suites (and suits) know full well that this entire bubblelicious line of BS you ran on middle-class America for more than two decades was an out-and-out fraud. It is impossible to argue otherwise - after all, it really is just fifth grade math on the nature of exponential functions, and unlike most of America it has to be presumed that if you got a Harvard MBA you passed. Therefore it can also be assumed that claims of ignorance will not serve you.

Let's face it - the economy isn't going to recover. All the stories I hear (and now Bloomberg is willing to print, which is surprising) in the anecdotal department are that you folks have your Gulfstreams fueled up and your bug-out bags packed and sitting by the door.

Most of you have figured out the math - there's simply too much debt that you created and sold off into the market, and you've all patted yourselves on the back as you walked out of Treasury smug in the "knowledge" that you'd be bailed out. Remember this picture?

Yeah, it was all good, right? Uh, well it was - for you. But for the rest of America, it sucked. You took the "CARD" act (the Credit Card reform act) and used the delay in its implementation to ram down Americans throats 29.9% interest rates and huge reductions in credit lines - even for those who had never been late. The Fed (one of you folks - banksters all) could have told you to cut it out and in fact demanded that you do so, but of course didn't.

The supposed "zero interest rates" are great for your bonuses - record bonuses, right? But nobody in America is getting the benefit except you. We the people are all paying more to borrow - when we can borrow at all. Bank Credit is contracting at a record rate. The stock market is on a tear, gold is on a tear, oil has more than doubled since March.

But if you go to Harlem in NY City you don't see "economic recovery." Nor do you if you step outside of the enclaves in Washington DC where everyone sucks on the government tit. No, what you see is both the NY and California State Governments on the verge of insolvency, property and other taxes heading to the moon to try to keep the states from having to fire police officers for lack of funds, and the crumbling of our infrastructure - along with the hiss of an overpressurized "social safety net."

The vampire squid sucked too much blood (debt service requirements) and now the host is dying from volumetric shock, all the while screaming not for whole blood (all gone!) but anything - even an injection of saline simply to make up the volume.

Now please don't get me wrong - I happen to think that you should not lend more. After all, we're here because we got drunk on credit, and you can't drink yourself sober, despite what CNBS keeps screaming about and calling for (including "The Donald" this morning, who's one of those folks who I suspect is going to wind up with all of his so-called "wizard deals" in the pine box of Chapter 7.)

No, we as a society need to go through the DTs and detox. Some of us will go bankrupt. That's ok. Indeed, if you as a citizen were imprudent - if you lied about your income to get a mortgage, if you played the HELOC game to pay off a credit card you ran to the sky (and then did it again - and again!), if you put yourself into a debt hole from which you cannot reasonably climb out, you should declare bankruptcy and get it over with. Discharge that which you can, take the hit to your credit and reputation, and learn from the experience.

Frugality isn't a sin, it's a virtue. It is, indeed, the first step of true capital formation - which is how, ultimately, we create jobs - and true prosperity.

In this vein you need to come out and tell the truth - you lent too much and you're NOT going to do it any more - no matter how loud people scream. We need reality in this country, not more fantasy.

But you folks who stole all this money?

You need to give it back.

Yeah, we know you can't give it all back since you blew some of it on Netjets to various exotic vacation destinations and high-priced hookers. We understand that.

What America doesn't understand and is increasingly unwilling to tolerate is the smug grin you folks have on Wall Street, having not only run Americans into bankruptcy but when your imprudent lending threatened to bankrupt you instead of sucking it up you extorted Congress to the tune of more than $12 trillion in direct support and guarantees.

That is you forced the bankrupt consumer to go broke twice and cover your imprudent acts, as all that money to cover up your insolvency is now being forcibly extracted from Main Street by the government through taxes!

Here's the problem, in a nutshell: If we don't get the debt out of the system - really get it out, not just shuffle it around and shift who's balance sheet it sits on - we can't restart true economic growth.

Without true economic growth we cannot regain the lost jobs, and people cannot regain their ability to earn an honest living and support themselves and their families.

You and I both know that The Government cannot continue to run $1.5 trillion deficits for very long. Indeed, it might be able to do it for even one more year. Ultimately Uncle Sam's credit card will come back declined just like the subprime homeowner, and when it does the thin veneer that has papered over the bankruptcy you have served up on the American people and her government will be ripped away like a bandage that has adhered to a scab.

That's when the riots start and both you and I know that too. It's why you're buying those guns.

But the guns won't save you if ugly times come.

Only preventing the riots will save you, and preventing the riots means we must stop bankrupting the country.

That in turn means we must stop ladling on more and more debt - HERE AND NOW!

Getting that bad debt out means that both borrowers (who are already going bankrupt) and lenders (who are thus far being protected) need to go bust.

That's reality.

This is beyond politics, wishes, dreams or desires - it is mathematics.

Justice, on the other hand, demands that the frauds and abuses not stand. No, ripping off Jefferson County Alabama is not acceptable, and paying a fine is not enough. People need to go to prison. Ditto for the other cities and states where these scams were run - and that's a huge number.

I understand your fear, Wall Street. If I robbed Main Street America of trillions of dollars I'd be afraid too.

Main Street is angry, and with good cause - and the "moguls" who claim that happy days will return if we can all start charging up our credit cards and HELOCing our houses again are not only wrong they're poking sticks into a hornets nest. That's right out of "Dumb and Dumber."

Arming yourselves won't solve the problem you created, and it also won't protect you should the mood in America turn truly ugly.

Do the right thing Wall Street.

Not only will it be good for your soul, it will be good for Main Street.
